The Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre, or Vancouver Aquarium, is a non-profit organization owned by the city of Vancouver and located in Stanley Park. It is Canada’s largest aquarium and one of the five largest in North America. It is a major tourist attraction for Vancouver and a global leader in marine research, conservation, and marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation. The Aquarium possesses approximately 166 aquatic displays and various galleries depicting aquatic life including The Pacific Canada Pavilion, Penquin Point and The Wild Coast. It was one of the first aquariums to employ full-time naturalists to interpret animal behavior for visitors in the galleries. It is also the headquarters of Ocean Wise, a global ocean conservation organization launched in 2017.
The Vancouver Aquarium relies on the many skills of its more than 500 full-time, part-time and casual employees to manage and run this world-class aquarium and organization. From accountants to plumbers, from security to gift shop representatives, each position contributes to the success and functioning of the whole. Current positions include an account representative, a photo sales associate, a marketing manager and an assistant biologist.
The Vancouver Aquarium provides its employees with competitive compensation and several benefits including an employee discount, two weeks paid vacation for new hires, ten sick days per year, all statutory holidays, a health and wellness plan and a RRSP matching program. The Aquarium is also an interesting and unique work environment. It provides its employees with the opportunity of eating lunch while observing seals or otters frolicking, all within the confines of the workplace.
The Vancouver Aquarium is internationally recognized for its conservation of aquatic life through innovative programming, superlative care and a commitment to research, the keystones of this organization. To this end, whether it is through visiting the Aquarium, school programs, online learning, volunteering, shoreline clean ups, or the B.C. Cetacean Sighting Network, the public is recruited to assist the Aquarium in fulfilling its mission of conservation through education. The Aquarium believes that for the ocean ecosystem to survive and thrive, current and future generations must be educated so that they can become inspired to protect it and all planetary life.
