Zymeworks is seeking an Associate Scientist to join the In Vitro Biology group within the ADC Therapeutic Development department. The In Vitro Biology group is responsible for the in vitro functional characterization and advancement of Antibody Drug Conjugate (ADC) therapeutic candidates and platform technologies. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic and motivated team supporting the advancement of novel platform technologies within our ADC therapeutic pipeline. Demonstrates enthusiasm for ongoing learning, actively seeking to enhance expertise in emerging concepts and innovative biology. The candidate will be challenged to critically analyze results and contribute to the Zymeworks team effort to create clinically and commercially relevant therapeutics.

Work Requirement

This position will report to the Scientist & Group Lead, In Vitro Biology, ADC Therapeutic Development and will be based full time onsite in Vancouver, BC office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversees the design, coordination, execution, and analysis of in vitro pharmacology experiments for the screening and progression of novel technologies for ADCs.
  • Functionally characterizes small molecules, antibodies, bioconjugates, or ADCs using various cell-based assays and techniques including flow cytometry, high throughput screening, live cell imaging, 3D tissue culture, and other methods as required to support pipeline project advancement.
  • Leads and executes novel assay development initiatives. Designs and troubleshoots novel methods to profile the mechanism of action of ADCs across multiple payload classes.
  • Applies knowledge of cancer biology, medicinal chemistry, and other scientific methodologies in conducting technically advanced analyses and data interpretations.
  • Effectively collaborates with members outside of their immediate team to coordinate execution of decision-making experiments for different projects and routinely shares progress updates with the team.
  • Prepares and disseminates data presentations for group meetings, summarizing results and next steps. Acts as area representative in specific projects.
  • Provides leadership, mentorship, and scientific/technical guidance to junior staff.
  • Supports mammalian tissue culture activities within the group. Works with team to ensure cell lines are properly expanded, cryopreserved and databases updated as required.
  • May co-author or author scientific papers, conference disclosures, patents, and/or regulatory documents.
  • May present at relevant scientific conferences on behalf of Zymeworks
  • Adheres to Zymeworks standard procedures for generating, documenting, and archiving data, maintaining an accurate, up-to-date electronic laboratory notebook.
  • Conducts all activities in accordance with scientific standards, OS&H regulations and established Zymeworks' policies and practices. Contributes to a safe and highly efficient laboratory environment.
  • Actively works to foster an environment of effective and collaborative working relationships amongst employees, management, and external partners.

Education and Experience

  • Associate Scientist: Requires a PhD in Molecular Biology, Immunology, Biochemistry with a minimum 1-2 years' relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with cell-based or biochemical assay development.
  • Demonstrated understanding of in vitro cancer models and therapeutic mechanisms of actions.
  • Experience with characterization and analysis of biotherapeutics (small molecules, antibodies, Fc-fusion proteins, ADCs or other immunoconjugates) is an asset.
  • Experience with high-throughput screening assays and workflows is an asset.

  • Results oriented.
  • In depth knowledge of antibody or antibody drug conjugate structure/function.
  • Knowledge of GraphPad and FlowJo softwares, or similar software, considered an asset.
  • Advanced knowledge and proficiency in the following techniques:
    • Flow cytometry
    • High-content analysis or fluorescence imaging
    • Mammalian tissue culture
    • Immunological/co-culture assays considered an asset

The Canadian base salary range for this full time position is $86,000 - $132,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location.

Within the range, individual pay is determined by a variety of factors and the salary offered may vary depending on the successful candidate's location and qualifications (including, but not limited to, job-related knowledge, education, training, skills, and experience).
