BioVectra Inc. has an opening for a Process Development Senior Scientist, Biologics. This is a permanent, full-time position located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
 

The candidate will be responsible for:

  • Being Project Lead for specific client projects, which includes supervision of staff, as well as the tasks below.
  • Onboarding of fermentation and downstream purification processes to produce purified products.
  • Developing and optimizing fermentation and purification processes for pharmaceutical products which are typically proteins or small molecules.
  • Carrying out literature searches as appropriate to currently known methods, designing new approaches as required, and preparing research plans.
  • Designing experimental plans for process improvement, characterization, technology transfer and scale up to GMP manufacturing. Managing the tech transfer and scale-up from the PD side and collaborating with the Technical Operations team in doing so.
  • Participating in identifying problems in pilot and commercial process runs as required and troubleshooting by designing scale-down models and testing process improvements.
  • Interpreting associated analytical results and process knowledge and use of current techniques to characterize the uniformity of the culture and the quality of the resulting product (Gram staining, PCV, HPLC, SDS-PAGE, etc.).
  • Writing Batch Production Records, work instructions and scientific progress reports.
  • Assisting the departmental manager ensuring the workplace is clean and equipment is well maintained.

The successful candidate for this position should have:

  • MSc/PhD in microbiology, bioengineering or biochemistry is preferred.
  • A B.Sc. with considerable industry experience will be considered.
  • Post-secondary education in Operational Management would be considered an asset.
  • Experience in microbial fermentation or protein purification and protein chemistry.
  • Four years large scale fermentation experience and downstream processing in a cGMP environment is preferred.
  • Experience with computer software including Microsoft Word, spreadsheets, and the ability to conduct online database searches.
  • Experience in bio-statistical methods such as DoE, evaluation of significance & variability, process modelling and use of bio-stats software such as Design Expert or JMP would be a considerable asset.
